Instead of viewing toys as entertainment, the Montessori approach treats them as tools that support concentration, coordination, and cognitive growth.
For parents in Sharjah, this approach aligns well with structured home environments and indoor-oriented lifestyles. With much of the day spent indoors due to climate conditions, selecting appropriate developmental materials becomes particularly relevant in shaping how children interact with their surroundings.

How to Choose Montessori Toys

Montessori-aligned materials are typically simple, functional, and designed with a clear developmental purpose. The emphasis is on quality rather than quantity. Natural materials such as wood, cotton, and metal are preferred because they provide tactile consistency and reduce overstimulation. Toys should reflect real-world objects rather than fictional or overly stylized items. This helps children build a connection between play and practical life skills. Visual and auditory distractions such as flashing lights or excessive sounds are generally avoided, as they can interfere with concentration.

Proportional sizing, safety, and durability are also critical considerations. Materials should be accessible to the child, stored in an organized manner, and easy to use independently. Observation of the child’s interests and developmental stage should guide selection rather than relying solely on age labels.

0–6 Months: Sensory Exploration and Visual Tracking

At this stage, development focuses on sensory awareness and early motor responses. Infants begin to track objects visually, respond to contrast, and develop basic grasp reflexes.

Appropriate materials include high-contrast visual cards, simple hanging mobiles, soft rattles, grasping rings, and unbreakable mirrors. These items support visual tracking, auditory awareness, and early hand coordination.

The environment should be calm and uncluttered, with safe floor space for supervised movement. In Sharjah households, maintaining a cool, quiet indoor setting is typically necessary to support comfortable exploration.

6–12 Months: Grasping, Reaching, and Cause-Effect Understanding

During this period, infants begin to develop intentional movement. Crawling, reaching, and object manipulation become more coordinated. The concept of cause and effect also starts to emerge.

Recommended materials include stacking rings, nesting cups, textured balls, and object permanence boxes. These tools encourage repetitive action, helping the child understand that objects continue to exist even when out of sight.

Activities that promote movement, such as crawling across safe floor areas or pulling up on stable furniture, contribute to gross motor development. Safety measures such as secured furniture and clear pathways are essential in home environments.

12–18 Months: Early Walking and Practical Exploration

Toddlers in this range are refining balance and mobility. They are also highly engaged in imitation and begin to mimic everyday activities.

Suitable materials include push walkers, simple wooden puzzles with knobs, shape sorters, and child-sized practical tools such as miniature cleaning or kitchen items designed for safe use. These materials encourage coordination and early responsibility through imitation of real-life tasks.

Accessible storage and clearly defined play areas allow the child to move independently between activities. This supports both physical development and emerging autonomy.

18–24 Months: Language Growth and Fine Motor Skills

Language acquisition accelerates significantly during this stage. Children begin to label objects, follow simple instructions, and express preferences.

Materials that support this phase include matching cards, simple sorting sets, stacking toys, and threading activities under supervision. These activities strengthen fine motor control while reinforcing cognitive categorization.

Parents can support development by naming objects during interaction and encouraging repetition. The goal is to integrate language naturally into daily play rather than relying on formal instruction.

2–3 Years: Independent Activity and Problem Solving

Children at this stage show increased independence and are capable of engaging in activities for longer periods. They begin to understand sequences and can follow multi-step tasks.

Recommended materials include multi-piece puzzles, basic construction sets, practical life tools, and matching or sorting games. Role-based activities that reflect real-world functions are particularly effective.

The focus shifts toward sustained concentration and problem-solving. Children benefit from environments that allow them to initiate, complete, and repeat tasks without interruption.

3–4 Years: Imaginative Structuring with Real-World Anchors

Imagination becomes more structured and intentional. Children begin to engage in symbolic play while still benefiting from materials grounded in reality.

Appropriate resources include alphabet materials, early counting tools such as beads, pattern blocks, and role-based play items that reflect real environments such as homes or community settings. Activities that involve classification, sequencing, and pattern recognition are also relevant.

At this stage, children can follow structured routines and benefit from organized learning spaces that separate different types of activities.

4–6 Years: Cognitive Expansion and Skill Refinement

This stage involves more advanced cognitive processing, including early literacy, numeracy, and logical reasoning. Children are capable of handling more complex tasks and working independently for longer durations.

Materials may include advanced puzzles, phonics tools, math manipulatives, geography-based materials, and classification systems. These resources support abstract thinking and reinforce foundational academic skills.

Children begin to connect concepts across different domains, applying learned skills to new contexts. Structured activities combined with self-directed exploration are both important.

Setting Up a Montessori-Friendly Environment at Home

A well-organized environment supports independent learning. Low shelves allow children to access materials without assistance. Storage should be minimal and categorized to avoid overwhelming choices.

Rotating toys periodically maintains engagement and prevents overstimulation. Each item should have a defined place, encouraging the child to return materials after use. Child-sized furniture and clearly designated activity areas further reinforce independence.

Consistency in layout and organization helps children develop internal order, which is a core principle in Montessori environments.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

One frequent issue is providing too many materials at once, which can reduce focus and lead to superficial engagement. Another is selecting toys that prioritize entertainment over developmental value, such as those with excessive sensory features.

Introducing materials that are too advanced or too simplistic for the child’s current stage can also limit effectiveness. Over-involvement during independent activities may interrupt concentration and reduce the child’s confidence.

Aligning Montessori Practices with Sharjah Lifestyle Context

Households in Sharjah often operate within indoor environments due to climate conditions. This makes indoor play areas and structured home setups particularly relevant for developmental activities.

Family-oriented routines and cultural emphasis on early education support the integration of Montessori principles. Balancing screen exposure with hands-on activities is also an important consideration, as tactile engagement plays a key role in early development.

Access to early learning institutions that follow structured methodologies can complement home-based practices and provide additional social and educational interaction.

Conclusion

Montessori-aligned toy selection is not about accumulation but about intentional choices that correspond to developmental needs. Each stage of early childhood introduces different cognitive, motor, and sensory requirements, and materials should evolve accordingly.

If you are a parent in Sharjah, you already know that the weather here does not simply change it swings. From the bone-dry heat of summer that pushes temperatures past 45°C to the surprisingly cool and breezy winter mornings that catch you off guard, Sharjah’s climate has a direct and often underestimated impact on how your child experiences nursery life every single day.

Most parents focus on choosing the right nursery the curriculum, the staff ratio, and the location. But very few think about how the weather outside those nursery walls shapes what happens inside them. Drop-off times, outdoor play schedules, clothing choices, hydration habits, and even your child’s mood and sleep pattern all of it shifts with the seasons.

This guide is written specifically for Sharjah nursery parents who want to stay one step ahead, season by season.

Understanding Sharjah’s Climate: A Quick Parent’s Primer

Sharjah sits in one of the most climatically extreme urban environments in the world. The year broadly breaks into two major seasons a long, intense summer and a short, mild winter with two brief transitional periods in between.

Summer (May to September): Temperatures regularly exceed 40°C, with humidity levels often climbing above 80%. UV index frequently hits “extreme” levels before 9 AM.

Winter (November to February): Temperatures drop to a comfortable 15°C to 24°C range. Mornings can feel genuinely cold, especially for young children.

Spring and Autumn transitions (March–April, October): Unpredictable. Sandstorms, sudden temperature spikes, and erratic humidity make these months surprisingly tricky for nursery routines.

Understanding this rhythm is the first step to building a nursery routine that actually works for your child’s health and comfort.

Summer: The Season That Demands the Most Adjustments

Summer in Sharjah is not just hot it is physiologically demanding, especially for children under five whose bodies regulate heat far less efficiently than adults.

Morning drop-offs matter more than you think. Between June and August, the temperature at 7:30 AM can already be sitting at 35°C with climbing humidity. A short walk from a car park to a nursery entrance in direct sunlight is enough to cause heat discomfort in a toddler. Lightweight, breathable cotton clothing is essential. Avoid synthetic fabrics entirely during these months.

Here is what smart Sharjah nursery parents do differently in summer:

Shift the morning routine 15 to 20 minutes earlier to avoid peak humidity windows

Apply SPF 30+ sunscreen even for brief outdoor exposure during drop-off

Pack an extra set of clothes children sweat heavily in humidity and wet clothing against the skin can cause rashes

Ensure your child drinks water before leaving home, not just at nursery

Communicate with the nursery about their AC settings rooms that are too cold after extreme outdoor heat can trigger respiratory issues in small children

Outdoor play is typically suspended by reputable Sharjah nurseries once temperatures exceed 38°C, in line with UAE Ministry of Education guidelines. However, it is worth confirming your nursery’s specific outdoor play policy in writing, particularly for the May-to-September window.

Winter: The Hidden Challenges Parents Overlook

Winter feels like a relief after summer, and for good reason it is genuinely the most pleasant time of year in Sharjah. But this season brings its own set of nursery routine challenges that parents consistently underestimate.

The single biggest issue is the temperature swing between indoor and outdoor environments. Nurseries maintain AC settings year-round in the UAE, which means a child dressed for a 17°C morning commute may overheat inside a centrally cooled building by mid-morning. Layering becomes critical.

Dress children in removable layers a light jacket over a short-sleeved top works far better than a single warm sweater

Winter in Sharjah is peak season for viral infections. Cold mornings plus crowded indoor nursery spaces create ideal transmission conditions for colds and flu. Reinforce handwashing habits at home during this period

Outdoor play resumes fully in winter, which is wonderful for development, but early morning play sessions (before 9 AM) can feel cold for children not properly dressed. Check your nursery’s outdoor schedule

Many parents also notice that children sleep longer and more deeply in winter. This can shift morning wake-up patterns and create unexpected drop-off delays. Adjusting bedtime by 20 to 30 minutes earlier from November onward helps maintain a consistent nursery arrival routine.

The Transitional Months: March, April and October

These three months are genuinely the hardest to plan around. Sharjah’s transitional seasons are marked by:

Sandstorms (shamals): Fine dust particles settle in airways and trigger allergic responses and asthma flare-ups in sensitive children

Sudden temperature spikes: A mild April morning can turn into a 38°C afternoon within hours

High pollen counts: Particularly in March, which causes itchy eyes and sneezing that parents often mistake for nursery-acquired colds

During transitional months, keep a saline nasal spray in your child’s nursery bag. It is one of the most underrated tools for keeping little airways clear in dusty, fluctuating conditions. Also check air quality index (AQI) apps like IQAir or the UAE’s own AirQ+ before outdoor activities on days following a sandstorm.

Building a Weather-Responsive Nursery Routine: Year-Round Principles

Regardless of the season, a few consistent habits will protect your child’s well-being and keep their nursery routine stable:

Hydration is non-negotiable. Children in Sharjah need more water than standard guidelines suggest. Aim for at least 1.2 to 1.5 liters daily for toddlers during warmer months.

Communicate proactively with nursery staff. Ask about their seasonal health protocols, outdoor play policies, and how they handle weather-related schedule changes.

Watch for heat fatigue signs after pick-up. Irritability, flushed skin, and reduced appetite after nursery in summer months often signal mild heat exhaustion, not behavioral issues.

Keep a consistent sleep schedule year-round. Sharjah’s seasonal shifts affect children’s circadian rhythms more than parents realize. A stable sleep-wake cycle is your strongest tool for nursery routine consistency.

Conclusion

Sharjah is a wonderful city to raise young children, but its climate asks more of parents than most places do. The nurseries that thrive here are the ones that adapt their routines seasonally, and the parents who see the best outcomes are the ones who stay informed and stay ahead. The weather in Sharjah is not background noise. For nursery-age children, it is a daily variable that shapes their comfort, health, and learning readiness. Treat it that way, and you will always be one step ahead.

Creating the perfect nursery involves far more than picking a pretty colour palette or a stylish crib. One of the most underestimated elements of nursery design is lighting and getting it right at every developmental stage can make a genuine difference to your baby’s sleep quality, visual development, and overall sense of security. At Little Feet Nursery Sharjah, we believe that a thoughtfully lit nursery is one of the greatest gifts you can give your growing child. Here is everything parents need to know about nursery lighting, from the newborn stage all the way through to the busy toddler years.

Table of Contents

Why Nursery Lighting Matters More Than You Think

Stage One: The Newborn Phase (0 to 3 Months)

Stage Two: The Crawler Phase (4 to 12 Months)

Stage Three: The Toddler Phase (12 Months and Beyond)

Creating a Holistic Nursery Lighting Plan with Little Feet Nursery Sharjah

Why Nursery Lighting Matters More Than You Think

Light is one of the most powerful environmental signals in your child’s world. It regulates their circadian rhythm, influences melatonin production, and shapes how their developing eyes perceive the world around them. The right nursery lighting does not just help your baby sleep better it actively supports healthy brain development, visual cortex growth, and emotional regulation. The wrong lighting, on the other hand, can overstimulate a fragile newborn, disrupt sleep cycles, or create safety hazards as your baby becomes mobile. Understanding how to adjust your nursery lighting environment at each stage is essential for every parent.

Stage One: The Newborn Phase (0 to 3 Months)

When your baby arrives, their eyes are among the least developed of all their senses. Newborns have wide pupils with very little ability to filter bright wavelengths, making harsh overhead lighting genuinely uncomfortable and overstimulating for them. At this stage, the ideal nursery lighting setup centres on soft, warm-toned illumination think candlelight warmth rather than daylight brightness.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends keeping the nursery sleep environment consistently dim to support healthy circadian rhythm development from the very beginning. The best approach is to choose warm white LED bulbs with a color temperature around 2700K. This tone is gentle on newborn eyes, mimics the natural warmth of a sunset, and signals to the baby’s brain that the environment is calm and safe.

Blue-toned light is particularly problematic at this stage. Cool white or daylight LEDs emit blue wavelengths that actively suppress melatonin production and signal wakefulness to the developing brain. Avoid cool daylight bulbs entirely in your nursery even during daytime feeds and nappy changes.

Stage Two: The Crawler Phase (4 to 12 Months)

As your baby moves through the four-to-twelve-month window, something remarkable happens in their brain. There is a significant surge in synapse formation within the visual cortex, and by around six months, a baby’s brain actually has fifty percent more synapses in the visual cortex than an adult’s. This is the stage where visual stimulation becomes developmentally crucial.

During daytime hours, your nursery lighting should support active, engaged exploration. Bringing in natural daylight through well-positioned windows (without allowing harsh direct sunlight to glare onto your baby) is ideal during play time. You can introduce slightly brighter, warmer artificial lighting to accompany tummy time and play mats, encouraging your baby to focus, track movement, and build the visual skills that underpin crawling, reaching, and spatial awareness.

However, sleep lighting at this stage remains just as important as in the newborn phase perhaps even more so. By around ten to twelve weeks, babies become far more aware of their surroundings, and a bright or inconsistently lit room becomes genuinely stimulating enough to prevent sleep. Dark, consistent nighttime environments with only a dim warm glow for any necessary feeds are still the gold standard during this phase.

Stage Three: The Toddler Phase (12 Months and Beyond)

The toddler years bring a whole new set of nursery lighting needs. By twelve to eighteen months, your child is moving independently, exploring every corner of the room, and beginning to develop the capacity for fear including, eventually, a fear of the dark. Sleep experts generally recommend waiting until at least two years of age before introducing a permanent night light for sleep, and only when the child themselves indicates a need for it.

That said, when the time is right, choosing the correct toddler night light is important. The dimmer the better toddlers do not need a brightly lit room to feel secure; they need a soft, reassuring glow that confirms the room is familiar and safe. Red-toned or warm amber lighting is the best choice at this stage, as red wavelengths have the least impact on melatonin levels and sleep quality.

Smart nursery lighting solutions are particularly valuable during the toddler phase. Colour-changing bulbs that shift automatically from brighter daylight tones during play to deep amber at bedtime help reinforce the sleep routine powerfully and gently. A toddler who associates dimming, warm light with winding down will transition to sleep far more easily than one whose environment gives no visual cues about the time of day.

Creating a Holistic Nursery Lighting Plan with Little Feet Nursery Sharjah

At Little Feet Nursery Sharjah, our approach to early childhood environments is rooted in developmental science. We understand that a child’s physical space is not simply a backdrop it is an active participant in their growth. The right nursery lighting environment evolves alongside your child, supporting their vision development, protecting their sleep architecture, and creating a space that feels both stimulating and safe at every milestone.

Whether you are setting up for a newborn, adapting for a crawler, or upgrading for an energetic toddler, thoughtful nursery lighting is one of the most meaningful investments you can make. Layer warm, dimmable overhead lighting with targeted task lighting near the changing area and feeding chair, add blackout support for nap times, and introduce a soft night light only when your child is developmentally ready to benefit from it.

A well-lit nursery is a well-loved nursery. And at Little Feet Nursery Sharjah, helping families build those spaces is exactly what we do.

Table of Contents

What Is a Sleep Regression, Really?

Why Does It Happen at This Age?

What Normal Looks Like

What’s Not Normal and Worth Paying Attention To

What Actually Helps

The short answer is yes, this is real, it has a name, and most of the time, it passes. But understanding what’s actually happening in your child’s brain and body makes all the difference.

What Is a Sleep Regression, Really?

A sleep regression is a period when a child who was previously sleeping well suddenly starts sleeping poorly. They resist bedtime, wake more frequently at night, or take shorter naps. Most parents have heard about the 4 month regression or the 18 month one. But the age 3 to 4 window is just as real and often more disruptive because kids at this stage are verbal about their resistance. They negotiate. They stall. They ask for one more glass of water like it’s a legal strategy.

This is not a parenting failure. It is developmental biology doing exactly what it’s supposed to do.

Why Does It Happen at This Age?

Between ages 3 and 4, children go through some of the most significant cognitive and emotional growth of their early lives. Their imagination is exploding. Their sense of self is sharpening. They are starting to understand that the world is bigger and sometimes scarier than they thought.

A few key reasons sleep gets disrupted at this stage:

Nighttime fears become very real. Around age 3, children develop the cognitive ability to imagine things that aren’t there. Monsters under the bed aren’t just a cliché. For a 3 year-old, they feel genuinely possible. The dark takes on a new meaning when your brain is capable of filling it with stories.

Separation anxiety can resurface. Even if your child seemed past this phase as a toddler, it often comes back around ages 3 to 4. They may suddenly panic at bedtime because they don’t want to be away from you. This is tied to their growing awareness of the world, not regression in the negative sense.

Big life changes hit hard. Starting preschool, a new sibling arriving, moving to a new home, or even a change in routine can unsettle a child’s sleep. Their nervous system is still learning how to regulate stress, and sleep is often the first thing to suffer.

Nap transitions cause chaos. Most children drop their daytime nap somewhere between ages 3 and 4. This transition period is messy. Too much daytime sleep makes bedtime a battle. Too little leaves them overtired and wired by evening, which paradoxically makes falling asleep harder.

What Normal Looks Like

During a sleep regression at this age, you might notice your child taking longer to fall asleep at night, calling out or coming to find you multiple times after lights out, waking in the middle of the night and struggling to settle back down, having vivid or frightening dreams, and showing more clinginess around bedtime than usual.

This can last anywhere from two weeks to about six weeks in most cases. It tends to peak and then gradually improve as whatever developmental leap triggered it settles down.

What’s Not Normal and Worth Paying Attention To

While sleep disruptions are common at this age, there are some signs that go beyond typical regression territory.

If your child is snoring loudly most nights, gasping during sleep, or breathing through their mouth consistently, that is worth raising with a pediatrician. These can be signs of sleep-disordered breathing or enlarged tonsils and adenoids, which genuinely interfere with sleep quality.

If the sleep problems come with intense daytime anxiety, frequent nightmares every single night for weeks on end, or your child seems genuinely distressed rather than just stalling, it may be worth speaking with your child’s doctor or a child psychologist. Sometimes persistent sleep issues at this age are tied to anxiety that needs a little extra support.

Also watch for sleep disruption that shows no improvement whatsoever after 6 to 8 weeks, bedwetting that suddenly begins after the child was fully dry, or sleepwalking and night terrors that are escalating in frequency.

What Actually Helps

The most important thing you can do during a sleep regression is hold the routine steady. Consistency is the anchor when everything else feels wobbly to your child. Keep the bedtime routine the same every night. A predictable sequence, such as bath, books, quiet conversation and lights out, signals to the nervous system that it’s safe to wind down. Kids at this age find enormous comfort in knowing exactly what comes next.

Address the fears directly. Don’t dismiss what your child says they’re scared of. Validate it, then problem-solve together. A nightlight, a “monster spray” bottle filled with water and lavender, a special stuffed animal that “protects” them at night. These things work not because they are logical but because they give your child a sense of control. Limit screen time in the hour before bed. The content matters too, not just the blue light. Stimulating shows or games crank up the nervous system right when you need it to quiet down.

Stay calm at the night wakings. If your child comes to your room or calls out, respond warmly but briefly. Long conversations, extra stories, or bringing them into your bed every time tends to extend the regression rather than shorten it. A short reassurance and return to their own bed is usually the most effective approach over time.

Give them tools for self-settling. Teach your child a simple breathing exercise or help them practice staying in bed for a few minutes when they feel scared before calling for you. Building that small tolerance is a genuine skill they will carry with them.

Sleep regressions at age 3 and 4 are real, they are normal, and they do not mean something is permanently broken. Your child is growing in enormous ways right now and their sleep is reflecting that growth. What you do during this stretch matters. Staying consistent, responding with warmth, and not catastrophizing the hard nights will get you through it faster than any sleep trick.

You will sleep again. So will they.

At Little Feet Nursery, we hear this from parents every single week. And our answer is always the same: yes, they will be okay, and with the right support, they will do more than okay. They will grow.

This guide has been put together by our experienced early years team to help you understand how our nursery environment is designed to help shy, introverted, or anxious children feel safe, seen, and ready to flourish. We also walk you through our nursery admission process step by step, so nothing feels uncertain before your child even walks through our door.

Understanding Shyness in Young Children – It Is More Common Than You Think

First, let’s take a breath. Shyness is not a flaw, and it is certainly not something that needs to be “fixed.” In the world of early childhood development, shyness is a recognised and completely normal personality trait. Many children between the ages of 2 and 5 are naturally cautious around new people, new places, and new experiences.

What matters is not eliminating shyness but creating the conditions in which a shy child feels safe enough to explore the world at their own pace. That is exactly what a good nursery setting should do and it is what Little Feet Nursery is built around.

Signs Your Child May Be Shy or Slow-to-Warm-Up

Shy or reserved children often show some of these behaviors when they enter a new early years setting:

They cling to a parent or carer during drop-off

They prefer to watch other children play before joining in

They struggle to speak with unfamiliar adults

They may appear withdrawn or tearful in new group settings

They take longer to settle into a nursery routine than other children

A Note From Our Team:
If your child shows any of these behaviors, you are not alone. These are signs of a thoughtful, observant child — not a problem child. Our practitioners are trained specifically to support children who need a little more time and gentle encouragement to open up.

How Little Feet Nursery Creates a Safe Space for Shy Children

Our nursery setting has been carefully designed both physically and emotionally to help quieter children feel comfortable from day one.

Small Group Sizes and a Low Child-to-Staff Ratio

Busy, noisy environments can be overwhelming for shy children. That is why we maintain small group sizes and an above-average child-to-key worker ratio throughout our nursery. This means your child is never just a face in the crowd, they are known, understood, and genuinely looked after by a familiar adult who takes the time to learn what makes them tick.

Key Person Approach – Your Child’s Special Adult at Nursery

Every child who joins Little Feet Nursery is assigned a dedicated key person. This is a trained early years practitioner who becomes your child’s primary point of contact during the nursery day.

For shy children especially, having one trusted adult who greets them each morning, knows their preferences, and checks in on them throughout the session can make an enormous difference to how quickly they settle.

The key person also acts as your main point of contact as a parent giving you regular updates, flagging any concerns, and celebrating every little step forward your child takes.

Calm, Nurturing Nursery Environments That Feel Like Home

Walk into Little Feet Nursery and you will notice something straight away: it does not feel clinical or institutional. We have worked hard to create warm, home-like spaces where children feel relaxed rather than overstimulated.

Cosy reading corners, soft lighting in rest areas, and clearly defined play zones all help shy children feel oriented and in control of their environment.

Child-Led Play and Learning No Pressure, Ever

Shy children often flourish when they are given the freedom to engage at their own pace. Our approach to play-based learning is child-led, which means we follow your child’s interests rather than pushing them into structured group activities before they are ready.

Over time, sometimes quicker than parents expect, we see shy children naturally gravitating towards their peers and beginning to form genuine friendships.

The Little Feet Nursery Admission Process – What to Expect

We know that the admission process itself can feel daunting, especially when you have a child who finds change difficult. So we have made our nursery enrollment process as gentle, transparent, and parent-friendly as possible.

Step 1 – Get in Touch and Book a Nursery Tour

Everything starts with a conversation. Reach out to us by phone, email, or through our website enquiry form, and one of our team will get back to you quickly to arrange a nursery tour at a time that suits you.

During your tour, you will meet our team, see our learning spaces, and get a genuine feel for the Little Feet Nursery environment. We actively encourage you to bring your child along — many shy children benefit enormously from seeing the nursery before their first session, with no pressure to interact or participate.

Step 2 – Your Nursery Place Application

Once you have decided that Little Feet is the right fit for your family, you will complete a straightforward nursery application form.

This covers:

Your child’s details

Their starting age

Any medical or dietary needs

The days and hours you require

We also include a section where you can tell us about your child’s personality, interests, and any concerns you have.

Step 3 – The Getting-to-Know-You Meeting

Before your child’s first session, we invite you and your child in for a relaxed, informal settling-in meeting with their key person.

This meeting helps:

Build trust between the child and key worker

Learn about comfort objects, routines, and interests

Understand what helps the child calm down

Gather small details that help with settling in.

Step 4 – Gentle, Gradual Settling-In Sessions

We never rush a child into full-time nursery attendance.

The settling process may include:

Short visits where a parent stays in the room

Gradual extension of session length

Flexible adjustments if the child needs more time

Daily check-ins with parents

For shy children, this phase may take longer, and that is completely fine.

Step 5 – Ongoing Communication With Parents

Once your child is settled, communication continues through:

Parent communication apps

Learning journals

Parents’ evenings

Progress reviews

Our door is always open if parents have concerns.

Language is more than just a means of communication it is the foundation of identity, culture, emotional expression, and connection. At Little Feet Nursery, we believe that nurturing a child’s language from an early age helps build confidence, curiosity, empathy, and a lifelong love for learning. With this belief at heart, we proudly celebrated International Mother Language Day, creating a meaningful experience that honored linguistic diversity, cultural heritage, and the joy of expression.

Our celebration was filled with interactive activities, colorful displays, cultural sharing, and engaging learning moments that allowed children to explore languages in a fun, age-appropriate, and inclusive environment. It was a day that brought together children, teachers, and families to appreciate the beauty of multilingualism and the importance of preserving our mother tongues.

Understanding the Importance of Mother Language

A child’s mother language plays a vital role in emotional development, cognitive growth, and social interaction. It provides comfort, security, and a strong sense of belonging. Learning and communicating in one’s native language allows children to express thoughts more freely, build relationships confidently, and develop a strong foundation for acquiring additional languages.

At Little Feet Nursery, we recognise that each language carries stories, traditions, and values passed down through generations. By celebrating International Mother Language Day, we aim to instill respect for all languages and encourage children to embrace their own cultural identities while appreciating those of others.

Creating a Language-Rich Learning Environment

In preparation for the celebration, our classrooms were thoughtfully transformed into vibrant, language-rich spaces. Walls were decorated with colourful posters, alphabets, words, greetings, and illustrations representing different languages spoken within our nursery community. Teachers introduced children to basic words such as greetings, numbers, and common expressions in various languages. This playful exposure sparked excitement, curiosity, and laughter, helping children understand that languages can be both meaningful and fun.

Children were encouraged to listen, repeat, and participate, making the experience highly interactive. Through songs, storytelling, rhymes, and group discussions, language learning became an enjoyable journey of exploration.

Engaging Activities that Sparked Joy and Learning

Our celebration featured a wide range of thoughtfully planned activities designed to support early language development while keeping children engaged and motivated.

Storytelling Sessions

Teachers and children shared short stories and poems in their native languages. These sessions helped children understand rhythm, tone, and expression while building listening and comprehension skills. Hearing familiar words in a classroom setting gave children a sense of pride and belonging.

Singing and Rhymes

Children enthusiastically participated in singing songs and reciting rhymes in different languages. Music created a joyful atmosphere and helped children remember words easily, improving pronunciation and confidence.

Language Games

Fun word-matching games, picture identification activities, and simple language puzzles were organized to reinforce vocabulary and cognitive skills. These hands-on activities encouraged teamwork, focus, and active participation.

Creative Art and Craft

Children expressed their understanding of language through creative artwork. They colored alphabets, illustrated words, and created simple crafts representing cultural symbols. This blend of creativity and learning allowed children to connect emotionally with the experience.

Celebrating Cultural Diversity and Inclusion

One of the most beautiful aspects of International Mother Language Day is its ability to bring people together through shared respect and understanding. At Little Feet Nursery, we proudly celebrate the rich cultural diversity of our families.

Parents were invited to share words, songs, stories, and traditions from their cultures. This involvement strengthened the bond between home and school while giving children exposure to a variety of languages and traditions. The classrooms echoed with cheerful greetings, melodious songs, and heartfelt stories, creating an atmosphere of warmth and unity. Children learned that differences in language and culture are not barriers but opportunities to learn, connect, and grow together.

Building Confidence Through Expression

Encouraging children to speak in their mother language helps nurture confidence and self-expression. During the celebration, children were given opportunities to introduce themselves, share simple sentences, and express thoughts in their native language.

This supportive environment helped children feel valued and respected, boosting their self-esteem and communication skills. Teachers gently guided them, offering encouragement and positive reinforcement, ensuring that every child felt comfortable participating.

Early childhood is a period of remarkable growth. Between the ages of one and five, children experience rapid development across physical, cognitive, emotional, and social domains. Understanding these developmental milestones helps parents support their child’s learning journey, identify potential concerns early, and create an enriching environment at home and in early learning settings.

This guide outlines the most important milestones for children aged 1–5, what parents can expect at each stage, and how to nurture healthy development with confidence.

Understanding Early Childhood Education

Early childhood education typically covers the developmental period from birth to six years of age. This phase is widely recognized by educators and neuroscientists as the most critical stage for brain development. During these formative years, children develop essential skills such as language, problem-solving, emotional regulation, social interaction, and motor coordination.

A structured nursery environment helps children:

Build confidence and independence

Develop strong communication skills

Learn positive social behaviors

Establish a love for learning

Strengthen emotional resilience

In Sharjah, where education standards are regulated and continuously improving, early learning centers are increasingly adopting internationally recognized curricula, including Montessori-based approaches, to ensure holistic child development.

Why Early Childhood Education Matters in Sharjah, UAE

Our Little Feet Nursery, Al Khalidiya were buzzing with excitement and some garden dirt, as we embarked upon Learning Plant Parts. There’s something distinctly magical about watching children experience nature for the first time, whether through viewing flowers or walking on grass instead it involves experiencing cool soil, rough bark and delicate veins of leaves all at once.

This event was more than a science lesson, it was an immersive sensory journey designed to allow children to connect with nature while developing fine motor skills and engaging with inquiry-based learning practices. Here’s a glimpse at how we brought a garden into classroom and what students discovered while participating.

Why Nature-Based Learning Is Beneficial

Before diving in with specific activities, it’s worth emphasizing why nature-based learning holds so much weight in our education systems. Children are natural scientists; they observe, question and experiment. When provided with natural materials we provide them with open-ended toys allowing their creativity and curiosity to run wild.
Studies demonstrate the positive benefits of interaction with nature on cognitive function, stress levels and creativity. By breaking apart Plant Parts into their components roots, stems, leaves and flowers we helped children understand systems.

Root of the Matter: Traversing Deep

Exploration began at its foundation. To fully grasp roots, we couldn’t simply look at photos; our hands needed to get dirty too. For that purpose, sensory bins with potting soil were set up along with safe gardening tools and magnifying glasses to get children involved with exploring these depths of knowledge.
Children were delighted to experience pulling small weeds up by their roots and inspecting their “hairy strings.” We explained how roots act like feet keeping plants tightly connected to the ground so wind won’t blow it away and also drinking up water from underground.

Stems: The Backbone of a Plant

As our investigation moved upward from the soil, we became intrigued with its stem. This provided a wonderful opportunity to incorporate engineering concepts into nature study children learned that it must be sturdy in order to support leaves and flowers.
At first, Sharjah Nursery children observed in amazement as dye travelled up celery stalks filled with color water to visually demonstrate that stems transport water. We then explored different stem types thick tree trunks versus delicate flower stems which they likened to their own backbones by showing how similar plants need them in order to stand tall like humans do.

Leaves as Food Factory

Our students enjoyed learning more about leaves due to the wide array of textures and shapes on offer at Nursery thanks to its proximity, children had plenty of specimens from local flora that thrived here to study and observe. Art was integrated into this science lesson by having children complete leaf rubbings. By placing leaves under paper and using crayons to draw over them, children revealed the intricate network of veins found throughout a leaf’s structure. Beyond just an artistic project; we taught children about anatomy too by discussing how veins carry water from its source all across its leaf surface.
Photosynthesis was explained simply to children, its leaves serve as the kitchen of Plant Parts where sunlight is converted to food by photosynthesis.

Flowers: Our Grand Finale

At the grand finale of our discovery journey was flowers. While their aesthetic beauty may make them seem irresistibly pretty, our goal was to teach children their functionality, as such we looked closely at vibrant hues and fragrant fragrances of various types of blooms discussing why such features attract bees and butterflies to gather around these blooms.

Integrating Curriculum at Kids Nursery in Sharjah

Events like Exploring Plant Parts demonstrate the value of an Integrated Curriculum. Not only did we explore science ,we practiced mathematics by counting petals and measuring stem lengths. Language arts was explored further as we learnt new words like nutrient absorb and anchor. Finally we worked collaboratively together using magnifying glasses and watering plants together an experience not to be forgotten.
By engaging children’s senses and encouraging curiosity through play-based activities and encouraging questions we build a foundation of academic success which far outshines rote memorization when children physically hold root systems they recall more about what each one does than just coloring a worksheet.

A Memorable Learning Day at Little Feet Nursery

Plant Parts Exploration Activity was an amazing day of discovery. Parents at Kids Nursery Sharjah often ask us how we balance academic preparation with play, and our answer is always that playing is preparation itself. Children’s enthusiasm, wonderment and joyful participation truly enhanced this exciting event for all involved.

Little Feet Nursery cherishes these special moments when little hands explore, little minds puzzle over and big learning happens effortlessly.
